The Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous System

    January 21, 2021 / No Comments

The sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system are two of three main subsidies of the autonomous nervous system which is a part of the peripheral nervous. The two systems control automatic functions like your breath, digestion, and your heartbeat. Naturally, our bodies…

    What is the Nervous System?

    January 21, 2021 / No Comments

The nervous system is a vast and intricate system of “wires” (nerves and specialized cells called neurons) that transmit signals to and from different parts of the body. If you were to compare a house to the human body, the nervous…

    January 2, 2021 / 1 Comment

2020 was a crazy weird year. It felt both amazing and shit at the same time. How can that be? I think it’s because there was the huge energetic awakening this year, and so many people were effected by it. So…

Sun-dried Tomato & Caramelized Onion Mac N’ Cheeze

    August 31, 2020 / No Comments

This sun-dried tomato & caramelized onion mac n’ cheeze is a new take on the forever classic: it’s baked, it’s gourmet, it’s decadent. The crispy tartness of the tomato is just so good! I am not a mac n cheese fan.…

    Vegan Instant Hot Cocoa Mix

    August 3, 2020 / No Comments

My favorite part about growing up in Canada has to be that feeling of sipping a hot and creamy hot chocolate after a few hours outside in the snow. When I went vegan in 2016, I severely missed having hot chocolate.…

Sailing across an ocean is a grand adventure that requires quite a bit of planning. You have to ensure the boat you’re sailing is sea worthy, you have a stash of various spare parts, extra fuel, cooking gas, possibly other crew…

    Pico De Gallo

    May 21, 2020 / No Comments

Living on a boat is fantastic, however some of the places we visit are quite rural and don’t have the majority of delicacies and food items we enjoy. For example, salsa can be hard (or expensive!) to come by, it’s generally…

MOVEMENT IS MEDICINE 💊

Movement can mean literally anything: walking, dancing, working out, yoga, swimming, running, sports, and more...

Doing only 15 minutes of movement can:
❂ improve strength, coordination, stability, balance
❂ maintain muscles health
❂ increase cardiac function
❂ decrease depression and other mental health
❂ promote a healthier lymphatic system (which improves the immune system)
❂ improve your overall mood
Take this as your sign to get up and move your body!!

Remember: healthy body = healthy mind = healthy life

⭐️AFFIRMATION OF THE DAY: I am powerful. I am worthy. I am grateful for everything that I am. ⭐️
Vegan Melanzana Parmigiana 🍆🧀🍅 cooked in the @gosun fusion solar oven.

Eggplant, pasta sauce, vegan mozzarella, and ground soy chunks. A bit time consuming to make each ingredient beforehand. However if made ahead of time, assembly is only 5min!

I cooked it when the sun was at the highest point in the sky for an hour and a half. It turned out perfect and delicious! Captain gave it a 10/10 ⭐️
“There are years that ask questions and years that answer” -Zora Neale Hurston

I came across this quote a few weeks ago and it’s been living rent free in my mind ever since. 2020 was the year of questions. Of what if’s. Of uncertainties. Not only was (and still is) the pandemic all-consuming, but so many other things happened as well. I was definitely left with more questions than answers...

Where am I going? What is my purpose for this life? How can live as close to my true self as possible? Do I even have it in me to do what I want? Am I even strong enough?

Last year was full of so many questions and struggles, but it’s left me (and I’m sure all of us) with a fire to find the answers to these questions.

2021 will be the year of answers. We just need to find a way manifest them.

🌻also, there’s a new blog post where i reflect on 2020 and my intentions for 2021 - link in bio🌻

Sunday Reflection

Sometimes we hate to hear it, but you really do need to get something in motion in order to change. Move different. Be different. End of.

📝Journal Prompt: How do I feel and what would I like to change? What’s the first step I can take towards this change? What is the simplest and most easiest step that I can implement regularly? How can I do this?

🔨Challenge for the week: Try and add this new step every day. Give it at least one minute of your undivided attention. See if you can stay longer.

Notice the difference. Reflect on your journalling, did moving different make you become or feel different? There is no right or wrong answer. Only truth ✨

Happy Friday everybody!

Today’s topic: Signs your Sympathetic Nervous System is Overworked + How to Balance It

The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is one of three systems in the autonomic peripheral nervous system. The other two systems are the entric NS and the parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS). These are in charge of the GI tract and our rest and digest processes respectively.

Naturally, our bodies cycle between the SNS and PSNS every 1-4 hours. One way you may notice this is by paying attention to which nostril is more dominant (I.e inhaling stronger/more).
Right nostril=SNS
Left nostril=PSNS

In today’s society however, we tend to spend most of our time in the SNS. This isn’t that great, because lots of times we get stuck there. When this happens, our healing and housekeeping processes get neglected.

You can’t use something without maintaining and repairing it! The same can be said with our bodies.

Balancing these two systems creates harmony within the body which then translates into your daily life!

This weekend, I challenge you to do the following:
❂ note how you’re feeling as you finish the work week / at the end of the day
❂ choose one of the “hacks” in my post, or be creative and choose a calming activity and try and spend at least 10minutes doing it (I think one hour is best though if you can!)
❂ take note how different you feel, how different your body feels. what changes, if any, do you notice? (This is a great journalling prompt!)

Let me know in the comments your thoughts!
