Vegan Instant Hot Cocoa Mix

My favorite part about growing up in Canada has to be that feeling of sipping a hot and creamy hot chocolate after a few hours outside in the snow. When I went vegan in 2016, I severely missed having hot chocolate. It was always way too expensive for a college student like me to buy a vegan one at the grocery store. Because of this, I have come up with my own vegan instant hot cocoa mix that has been a number one staple in my pantry (especially now that I live with Mike who is a chocoholic).

It’s a really simple recipe, technically only two ingredients are required (I highly recommend all 5 ingredients). The cinnamon is my personal twist, and isn’t really necessary, as is the salt. But the cayenne? It’s a must. It pairs with chocolate so wonderfully and really brings out the chocolate-y-ness. It’s absolutely divine! All you have to do is add them to a jar and shake! It’s really that easy!!

These are delicious paired with some shortbread cookies! Check out my recipe here.

Some other delicious flavours to add to your vegan instant hot cocoa mix:

  • cardamom
  • cloves
  • dried lavender
  • peanut butter powder

To make the actual hot cocoa from the mix, add 2 to 3 tablespoons of the instant hot cocoa mix to a mug and a cup of boiling water or hot milk. I tend to add 3 heaping tablespoons (because chocolate!!), fill my mug 3/4 with boiling water, and top it off with some coconut or cashew milk. I sometimes add a drop of vanilla essence or vegan marshmallows.

Great toppings / additions:

  • almond butter / essence
  • whip cream
  • maple syrup / honey
